Jolene DeWitt is a fellow orphan, and host to new residents at the orphanage. Jolene quickly befriends Beth and helps her navigate the rules and regulations of orphan life. In the book, 13-year-old Jolene sexually assaults 8-year-old Beth. Jolene became a paralegal after she graduated from Kentucky State University, which she attended on a Physical Education scholarship. When she found out that the school used to be called the State Normal School for Colored People, she wanted to study history.
